The increase in Google searches for “dow jones” could spell trouble for the markets going forward, according to an article in MarketWatch.
The article cites comments from Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, who explains that “Main Street googles ‘dow jones’ when they are worried about stock-market volatility.” The concern for investors, he says, is that noise around market volatility and recession indicators could make consumers more cautious heading into the 2019 holiday season.
Even if average Americans don’t own equities, Colas argues, they know that market volatility signals the potential for job losses or a recession. “One thing is sure,” he says: “Americans are watching.”
